Things I Hate...

Here I am working on a Sunday. Yes, a Sunday. I hate that. Been super busy recently. We're planning a trip in Sep and I hope I last that long.
Anyway, this whole hate thing got me thinking about other things I despise.
-Companies that assume you've never heard of the internet.
Annoying commercial: Iditot looking at different cars that MAGICALLY appear in front of them. "Now what you wish you could do in real life, you can do on Vehix.com"
Oh really?! You don't say! Wow, thank God Vehix is here to update me on these things after my 10 year sabbatical living in a cave. Now, what this in... ter... net thing you speak of?
-Salespeople/Repairmen. Our AC was giving us problems and we had a guy out. He cleaned out all this gunk on the side (no one ever told us you have to clean your outside AC once a month) and told us our compressor was dead and just pushing hot air through the house. We need a new one and really should just go ahead and get a whole new AC. Having half a brain I decided to actually see how the AC works after the repair before deciding. It's currently 73 degrees in here. Now we might well need a new compressor and/or AC (we'll see when the next power bill comes in), but if my AC is just pushing hot air, it must be pushing the hell out of it.
-People who get to 4 way stops well before you but refuse to go until you've come to a 100% complete stop. They sit they're like frightened bunnies glaring at your car like it's the grim specter of death. Go! If I'm steadily slowing down as I approach the intersection and am going about 5 mph, it is probably safe for you to go.

March of the Penguins...

Last night, Lauki checked out this quirky little nature doc that is turning into the suprise movie of the summer. It is awesome. A feature length doc that is nothing but footage of penguins and narration by Morgan Freeman. As a lot of reviews have observed, what's so amazing about this movie is how it's humor and drama beat 90% of what Hollywood vomits out each year with entire teams of writers, actors, directors, etc.
Now I've always been a nature film fan so I am byassed. I love docs where they follow one animal or family over the course of a year. Really anything like that is fascinating to me. This one, however, really is special. You cannot help but be astounded at the outrageous lengths these little guys go through to keep the species alive in the most inhospitable of places. This is also a great movie to watch at the theater (I think it's only at The Magnolia) because it is a great group experience. There's one moment where you actually realize the whole crowd is on the edge of their seats as the penguin parents try to transfer an egg from one pair of feet to another without killing the chick inside. Genius.
I can only hope that, in typical Hollywood fashion, there will be a short lived bandwagon period where we get at least a few more gems like this one.

Goodbye beloved Millennium Cherokee...

First off, a SW conversation in my very own blog and I miss it. Grrr! Been insanely busy. Too busy to even write complete sentences! We were in Miami for a week which I forgot to post about. Also, we saw Alanis at Bass Hall last week. Great show. Can one be manly and admit to really enjoying her concert? Then last night we saw Dylan at the Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnic. Awesome as always. I loved every second of it.
The audience... yikes! They made a NASCAR rally look like an opera crowd. Take one dusty bowl (literally), add 20,000 good ole boys and girls and simmer all day long.
Ok, the car. On top of everything else I have retired my first car, the MC. The new car is a little nicer. Nicer as in a fine wine compared to flat soda but those of you who remember my college drinking habits know I like flat soda! I'll miss the MC. That's the car that made the Miami-Dallas drive three times along with countless other trips. It's the car Lauki first discovered Dallas in. It was our only transportation for a period of years where we both had full time jobs. How did we ever manage that?!
Luckily I do loooove the new one. I went ahead and treated myself a bit. Economically I felt justified in that I'll drive it for many, many years after paying it off. Also, no one can accuse me of being soft. I must be the only nut in America in my income bracket who would accept driving an AC-less car in Dallas TX.
So, to make things official: "(Emperor voice) New car. Henceforth your name shall be... Stormtrooper."
